MAN Latin America presents eco-friendly city bus with natural gas-diesel system

Bus with sharply reduced emissions starts scheduled service

MAN has presented a new city bus in Rio de Janeiro that can be largely run on natural gas, or alternatively on diesel, and leads to drastically reduced emissions. The prototype is part of the program for sustainable transportation in Rio in view of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. The aim is to provide public transportation that is more efficient and kinder to the environment in Rio and surrounding areas.

The Volksbus is equipped with an MAN Euro V engine and has a special dual injection system that can be filled up with either diesel or natural ¬gas. The new system enables fine particulate emissions to be cut by 80 percent and CO2 emissions by 20 percent. The city bus was developed specially for the environmental program in Rio by MAN Latin America, together with Robert Bosch GmbH.

The prototype with VNG (vehicular natural gas) + diesel technology can be run on up to 90 percent natural gas. It will be put into use in Rio on a fixed route operated by public transportation service Setrans. In the test phase performance data like energy efficiency and the diesel substitution rate as well as the profitability of the project are being measured exactly. There are particularly high gas reserves just off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
