The ceremony was attended by Dr. Kurt Gribl, mayor of the city of Augsburg, and Karl Michael Scheufele, president of the administrative region of Swabia. A total of EUR 2 million will be invested in the facility, which is scheduled to be completed in July/August 2011.

The day nursery in Augsburg’s Sebastianstrasse will accommodate 76 children when it opens its doors after the 2011 summer holidays. There will be 42 places for infants between the ages of eight weeks and three years, and 34 for children aged three to six. Children of MAN Diesel & Turbo SE employees will be accorded preferential treatment but parents with no association with the company can also apply for a place in either section of the nursery. It will provide a holistic learning environment, actively fostering language acquisition (e.g. the children will get to know the English language in a playful manner), encouraging musical and artistic appreciation, and stimulating the individual skills and interests of the children.

The project is backed by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, the State of Bavaria (administration of Swabia) and the city of Augsburg (Office for Children, Youth and Family Affairs). The Munich-based Girnghuber Wolfrum architects office is responsible for the design of the 760-m2 facility. Work on the project got underway on 14th July 2010 at a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony.

In addition to Dr. Kurt Gribl, Karl Michael Scheufele and other leading figures from Augsburg public life, Klaus Stahlmann, Executive Board Spokesman of MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, and Dr. Stephan Timmermann, Executive Board member responsible for the company’s Maritime and Service business also attended the ceremony. Klaus Stahlmann underlined the company’s social responsibility: “MAN Diesel & Turbo is part of this city and, through its commitment to this day nursery, wishes to contribute to a vibrant and positive social environment. Throughout its long history, the MAN Group has frequently demonstrated its awareness of its social responsibility – another example of this commitment is the foundation of the company nursery at MAN Nutzfahrzeuge in Munich in March 2009.“ Dr. Stephan Timmermann focused on MAN Diesel & Turbo’s employees: “As an internationally active company, we face fierce competition and must therefore demand a high level of personal commitment from our staff. With this day nursery we aim to help our employees achieve a positive balance between their professional and family lives.”
